It is an easy stretch to argue that modern Danish design is inspired by the functional simplicity and craftmanship embodied in the viking ships from around 1000 AD. Because their shipbuilding skills at that time were better than those of their neighbors, the Danish vikings ruled much of Northern Europe, including much of England. In viking shipbuilding an "askman" was a person skilled in building the parts of a viking ship that is built in ashwood. Hence the Askman heritage is uniquely entwined with modern Danish design.
